Bastakiya

We've always wanted to create a photo blog, finally...it's here.

For our first post, we'll take to you to our favorite place in Dubai - Bastakiya.

The Bastakiya District in Dubai is known for its fascinating century old architecture and the urban planning. An old residential area along the famous Dubai Creek in Bur Dubai, Bastakiya District dates back to the early 20th century. Measuring approx. 300 meters in length and 200 meters in width, the old Bastakiya area with its narrow lanes and tall wind towers has always fascinated visitors. Its amazing wind-towers, gypsum decorations and woodwork never fail to impress visitors. One can find largest concentration of traditionally designed courtyard houses to the east of Al Fahidi Fort, all built within wind towers. These rooftop wind towers were not merely decorative, but were used for the purpose of cooling houses. Dubai Municipality has been involved in renovate all the historic buildings of the Bastakiya area since December 2001.

The Bastakiya area now has a museum, cultural center, and an art gallery, along with restaurants and traditional markets in an effort to provide visitors an insight into the traditional life and cultural heritage of the area. The Majlis Gallery and XVA, an old traditional restored house with a hotel, gallery and café, are must visit attractions on your visit to Bastakiya District.

This serves as our first entry to My World Tuesday. Click on their logo below for an adventure to other fascinating places.
